Bishop Mtumbuka dares teachers to work hard

Bishop Martin Mtumbuka of Karonga Diocese of the Catholic Church has challenged teachers to work hard to impart knowledge, skills and foster moral as well as spiritual development among learners.

He said this on Thursday at Karonga Boma during the dedication of St. Denis Catholic Primary School which was followed by the feast of Saint Joseph and commissioning of priests from the Association of Ad Gentes Missionaries of St. John Paul II.

Said Mtumbuka: “This is a continuation of the diocese’s commitment to quality education to children in the diocese.

“We run primary, secondary and post primary schools here but this particular institution has a unique objective which is to raise funds to improve and develop rural primary schools which are in bad shape and lack teaching and learning materials.”

He said the church wants to develop children from both well-to-do and underprivileged families.

“Therefore, it is upon teachers to realise this feat to

help the church’s obligation to give good education to our children who can develop the country and run the church with integrity,” said Mtumbuka.

On her part, the school’s head teacher Eunice Mughogho said teachers were ready to maintain education standards that define Catholic educational institutions.

“We will strive to mould productive citizens through dedicated and hardworking teachers who are instilling discipline in learning in the district,” she said.

In an interview, Karonga district director of education, youth and sports Mercy Mayuni commended the diocese for constructing the school.

“The school has come at the right time when we have many learners. So, apart from shaping productive citizens, it will also decongest schools in town,” she said.

The school opened its doors in September last year and has 276 learners.
